Card fraud rates and complaints
Coverage published by Emol on August 5, 2026, detailed that debit cards saw their fraud rate increase from 0.04% to 0.07% between the first half of 2025 and the first half of 2026. For credit cards, the reported fraud rate was 0.14%.
The data points to a rise in both the volume of reports and the money involved, within the period covered by the Central Bank. The material reviewed does not add other breakdowns by channel or transaction type beyond those rates and the total amount attributed to digital banking fraud.
Biometric authentication risks
Separately, Clarín reported in a piece on financial security that DEF CON 34 demonstrated ways to bypass biometric controls used by banks and fintechs across Latin America. The report also said that facial verification should not be the only requirement for opening, recovering, or moving an account to another device.
The warning has regional implications and could affect Argentine users if those verification schemes are used as the main access barrier. The key point of the demonstration, according to the report, was that facial biometrics should not be the sole condition for enabling sensitive account actions.
