Chile, Mendoza Advance Cybersecurity Bills
Chile and Mendoza advanced bills on cybersecurity, data, and digital protection. Both measures are still moving through parliament.
Chile’s House Science Committee decided to keep moving forward on merged motions covering protection for children and adolescents on social media, algorithmic responsibility, and changes to the framework cybersecurity law. In Mendoza, the Senate gave initial approval to a cybersecurity law aimed at protecting public data and systems.
Chile’s House Science Committee voted to keep moving forward on merged motions that would create a broader framework to protect children and adolescents on social media, address algorithmic responsibility, and amend the framework cybersecurity law to add principles for child and adolescent protection, age restrictions, and preventive information in digital environments.
Chile, two bills in first review
During the same session, the committee also began reviewing another bill that would require digital platforms to establish a legal domicile in Chile. The measure is in its first constitutional stage and was introduced through a motion by several deputies.
Chile’s legislative agenda now has two separate tracks underway. One focuses on protecting minors and assigning responsibility to algorithmic systems. The other centers on the legal presence of digital platforms in the country.
Mendoza gets initial approval
In Mendoza, the provincial Senate approved a cybersecurity bill on an initial vote, with 34 votes in favor and 2 against. The measure now moves to the Chamber of Deputies for further review.
According to 617.news, the proposal promoted by the executive branch seeks to protect the information systems and data of Mendoza residents against the rise in digital crime and attacks on public agencies.
With that step, the province has moved the bill to its next legislative stage, while in Chile the House Science Committee kept open two separate discussions on child protection, algorithmic responsibility, cybersecurity, and obligations for digital platforms.
