Chile, Brazil Tighten Digital Abuse Rules
Chile is advancing cyber law amendments, while Brazil enacted tougher penalties for sexual crimes against minors in digital environments.
Chile’s Science Committee continued work on consolidated motions that would amend Cybersecurity Framework Law 21,663 to add child and adolescent protection principles, age restrictions, and preventive information for digital environments. In Brazil, the government enacted Law 15,211/2026, which toughens penalties for sexual crimes against minors in digital settings and expressly covers cases tied to AI and deepfakes.
Chile’s Science Committee continued, on August 10, to review consolidated motions that include a bill to amend Cybersecurity Framework Law 21,663. According to the parliamentary record of the session, the proposal seeks to add principles for protecting children and adolescents, age restrictions, and preventive information in digital environments.
At the same time, Brazil turned a reform into law aimed at sexual crimes against children and adolescents in digital settings. The federal government signed Law 15,211/2026, which increases penalties in these cases and explicitly addresses situations involving artificial intelligence and deepfakes. The text also creates a legal concept to cover digitally produced or manipulated material, even when it is entirely fictitious.
G1 also reported that the new law authorizes so-called virtual patrols, a method that allows investigative agencies to monitor public digital spaces, such as websites, forums, and social networks, for evidence of online crimes.
Taken together, the two moves point to a regional shift in digital and cybersecurity regulation. Chile is still debating changes to its current framework, while Brazil has already advanced a specific law for digital sexual crimes against minors, with direct references to AI tools and investigations in open internet spaces.
