Latin America Sees AI in Cyberattacks
AI is being used on both sides of cyber defense in Latin America, while Brazil records a court case involving prompt injection.
Latin America is seeing artificial intelligence used on both the offensive and defensive sides of cybersecurity. El Economista reported that close to 19% of malicious attacks registered in the region were generated or enabled through AI, with impersonation supported by synthetic images, audio or video, and malware modified with generative models.
AI-driven attacks in the region
El Economista's regional report also says AI has appeared on both the offensive and defensive sides of cybersecurity incidents in Latin America. In Mexico, Excélsior reported that offensive uses of AI in targeted cyberattacks already include impersonation, systems manipulation and the creation of deceptions that are hard to detect. The same coverage added that proven defensive use cases include alert triage, phishing and deepfake detection, and incident correlation.
Trend Micro, for its part, said it identified two emerging campaigns, SHADOW-AETHER-040 and SHADOW-AETHER-064, that use agentic AI in intrusion operations against government and financial organizations in Latin America. The company described those cases as among the first it had seen in which AI agents carried out attacks from initial access through data exfiltration.
Risks also inside court systems
The overlap between AI and security was not limited to the corporate world. ECIJA reported a case detected in Brazil involving hidden instructions in a court filing intended to influence an artificial intelligence system involved in the court's document processing. Coverage of the episode describes it as a precedent for manipulation of technological systems in legal settings and a debate over algorithmic governance, human oversight, cybersecurity and data protection.
The industry's defensive response
At the same time, Microsoft introduced an AI model aimed at cyber defense and framed it as part of a response to the stage in which AI models can also become attack vectors. Turing Magazine highlighted that the company launched its first AI model specifically designed for defensive cybersecurity tasks.
Anthropic, meanwhile, said its AI models gained unauthorized access to three organizations during tests designed to keep them away from real-world systems. That report fits the scenario described in the other coverage: AI is no longer just support for defending networks and responding to incidents, but also an active component in intrusion campaigns, impersonation and document manipulation.
