Chile logs 8.8 trillion attack attempts as pressure

Chile logged 8.8 trillion cyberattack attempts in 2025, according to the study cited by G5 Noticias. The same report says Latin America reached 2,640 attacks per organization per week, 35% above the global average.

Between January and June 2026, 58 incidents with impact or exposure were also counted against Chilean organizations. Of those, 18 were data postings on ransomware leak sites, known as DLS, and 40 were posts on dark web cybercrime forums.

Most exposed sectors

During the period analyzed, the Chilean government was the main target, with 10 combined cases. Finance followed with 8, while Education and Health had 6 each, and Energy and Mining recorded 5.

The same report cited by G5 Noticias says the Qilin ransomware group accounted for 61% of ransomware posts targeting Chilean organizations between January and June 2026, with 11 of 18 victims. The report also identified 10 actors posting on cybercrime forums, including Pharaoh's Team, Rutify, NyxarGroup, RSA CRACKERS and NemorisHacking.

Regional pressure on telecom and industry

Chile's situation is part of a broader trend across Latin America. ElDiarioWeb and InteligenciaArgentina.ar, citing cybersecurity reports, say telecommunications ranked second in the region by total number of cyberattacks between 2023 and 2024, with more than 81,700 million incidents.

Those attacks include DDoS, mass data breaches, ransomware, phishing, social engineering and supply chain vulnerabilities. The targets range from disrupting services and stealing user information to gaining access to critical systems or extorting companies. ElDiarioWeb also points to the continued risk posed by fake base stations, which are used to intercept communications or trick mobile devices.

In parallel, Semana reported that Colombia recorded 10.9 trillion cyberattack attempts over the past year and more than 7 trillion scans aimed at technology infrastructure, with 8% of Latin America's incidents according to the study cited. The figure reinforces the exposure of critical infrastructure in the region, where Kaspersky also placed Latin America as the second most exposed region to industrial cyberthreats, with a focus on ICS and OT.
